  • Input Voltage: Determine the available power supply in your workshop or job site. Stick welders operate on different input voltages 110, 240 or 415 volts. The input amperage of 16 or 32 amps will also affect output.
  • Power Output: Ensure the welder has sufficient power output amperage to handle the thickness and type of materials you plan to weld. Work on the basis of 35 to 40 amps per mm diameter material to be welded.

2. Duty Cycle:

  • Duty Cycle: the percentage of time in a 10 minute cycle the welding plant can operate without overheating.

3. Portability and Weight:

  • Portability: Consider the weight of the machine & whether it has a carry strap for portability. Some inverters, such as the Fronius Ignis 15O EF have power factor correction meaning you can run welding leads from the power source as far as 100 metres without seeing a reduction in arc stability & amperage.

4. Arc Stability and Control:

  • Hot start; Increases current at the start of the welding arc. A peak in energy prevents the welding electrode from sticking
  • MMA Pulse; A reduction in heat input assists when welding thinner metals, overhead/ the vertical up positions & in bridge gapping
  • Power factor correction; Smooths input current peaks & troughs from the grid or power generator, improving arc stability.

5. Material Compatibility:

  • Versatility: DC arc welding inverters can weld steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Versatile MMA welders, such as the EWM Pico 160 CEL allow you to weld with cellulosic stick electrodes.
