SFC Midlands; Foster GX Air Fed & X300A on torch project
SFC are a structural fabrication and installation company, specialising in steelwork including staircases, balconies, and one off bespoke fabrications. Since 2019 HSE tightened their legislation around the harmful effects of welding fume, large fabricators, including SFC needed to source preventative measures to protect their welders from these hazardous welding fumes.

Being involved in the steel structural engineering sector SFC has always been committed to fulfilling the health and well being of its staff, however with growing pressures SFC Midlands decided it was time to address the matter with a long term solution. As a trusted supplier for their structural welding and grinding supplies, which have proved successful, SFC approached us to see if we could improve their air quality further.
Our Solution
To accurately measure the air quality within the workshop we set up an EDI air quality monitoring unit for 2 months to provide data on fume types and levels. The report highlighted that welding fumes and dust created from grinding were the primary issues. Our first solution was to provide the welders with Foster Works X-300A on torch extractors, with on torch extraction proving to be the most successful at removing fume at source. As an extra enforcement, each welder was given the Foster GX Welding/Grinding Air Fed Helmet, to allow them to fulfil their grinding applications with upmost safety. The measures put in place proved a success in decreasing weld fumes and reducing exposure from dust within the workshop, creating a safer working environment for all.
