Eurotunnel; a journey to reducing welding fumes

Fume extraction

Eurotunnel approached us in the quest to find an effective method of extracting MIG welding fumes, from railway carriages. Foster Industrial offer an array of solutions to help remove welding fumes, without making compromises on efficiency. We undertook a full audit of Eurotunnel's welding operations in order to find a way forward.

The Challenge

The challenge for us was to provide Eurotunnel with a universal fume extraction solution for a range of applications. With welding taking place inside a railway carriages, we needed to make sure the welders and other operatives, were fully protected.

The Solution

We confidently proposed the use of our very own on torch fume extraction unit, the Foster Works X-300A. On torch extraction has been proven to be the most effective way to reduce welding fumes, capturing up to 90% of welding fume at source. We paired the heavy duty X-300A with the lightweight Translas 7XE mini torch which is a particularly operator friendly gun.

To ensure any remnants of fume were removed from the 'at height' railway carriages, a further investment was made in a mobile fume extractor with double filter capacity, namely the Kemper Smartfil Fume Extractor. Mobile fume extractors lend themselves to this type of requirement, the portability in turn with a large 4 Metre arm allowed the arm to get up & over and gain access to the application.

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) offers great primary protection to the welder themselves and form a second line of defence, after LEV has been deployed. The Foster Prem Air was selected as the air fed welding helmet of choice. It's excellent P3 level of filter protection, smartsensor technology and true view lens specification winning the day.

'Steve visited site, listening to our requirements and was honest about what “On Torch Extraction” could do. Successful trialling and the fact it was far superior to other leading brand which we tested, led us to purchase the equipment. We have now protected the team whilst adhering to health and safety requirements. Very happy welders’
