What is Plasma cutting ?

Plasma cutting is a process that is used to cut many different types of metal using a plasma torch. In this process compressed air is blown at high speed out of a nozzle; at the same time an electrical arc is formed through the air from the nozzle to the surface being cut turning some of that air to plasma. The plasma is sufficiently hot to melt the metal being cut and moves sufficiently fast to blow molten metal away from the cut.

The main advantages of Plasma cutting over older cutting methods such as Oxy/Fuel is it's quicker, cleaner, safer, requires no pre-heating, and it only uses compressed air which can be provided from an everyday workshop compressor. The metal being cut doesn't have to be clean as plasma will cut neatly through rust, mud and paint, plus it can also cut through multiple layers in one go.
